Text statistics

Know the size of your writing. Count text and estimate reading time, privately in your browser.

Type or paste plain text. Spaces and blank lines count. Nothing is saved.

Limit: 100,000 UTF-16 units; some emoji use several units. Counting runs in a local browser worker.

How counting works

Characters

Characters are grapheme clusters, including spaces: é, e + combining accent, and a family emoji each count as one. Code points and UTF-16 units are separate technical counts. Text is not normalized.

Words

Words use the selected text language's Intl.Segmenter word-like segments. Numbers count; punctuation and standalone emoji do not. Chinese and Japanese do not need spaces. Mixed text and browser versions can produce different boundaries.

Lines

Empty text has zero lines. Otherwise, each CRLF, CR, LF, NEL, U+2028 or U+2029 break adds one line, including a trailing blank line. CRLF is one break.

UTF-8 bytes

Bytes are the UTF-8 encoding of the current text, without a byte-order mark. Browsers may normalize pasted line endings; this is not an original file-size measurement. Broken surrogate units are encoded as replacement characters.

Reading estimate

Reading time is words × 60 ÷ your chosen rate, rounded up to seconds. The default is 200 words/minute; choose 60–1000. This is an assumption, not a measured or language-calibrated reading speed.
